Matawan, New Jersey homeowners wanted a major facelift for their kitchen. The existing space felt dark and closed off, while lacking functional storage. They envisioned a much brighter, more modern room that would flow seamlessly into the dining room to better accommodate their young family of five. They also wanted to enhance the practical storage space so the room would feel more open and uncluttered. The design team at Woodhaven worked closely with the homeowners’ contractor, Ralph Dimaiolo at VIP Home Improvements, to deliver a kitchen renovation that checked every box.
A Re-Imagined Layout
The first step was to rework the layout of the room. Woodhaven and VIP Home kept the original L-shaped line of cabinetry, but removed walls to make a natural connection to the adjacent dining room. Replacing the cabinetry flanking the window above the sink with decorative shelving allows the natural light to stream in. Using cabinetry that reaches the full height of the room draws the eye up, making the room feel more expansive, while a central kitchen island anchors the space.
Modern Aesthetic Features
From Tribeca Cabinetry, a brand known for their affordable luxury, they selected the Southampton door style for their kitchen cabinets. A modern twist on a classic design, these “skinny” Shaker cabinets in the Snow White finish are crisp and flawlessly stylish. Small gold knobs and sleek gold pulls bring in a subtle touch of glamour to the open canvas. A custom hood over the range lends a bespoke, high-end feel to the main cooking zone while casually breaking up the line of upper cabinetry. And to beautifully marry the three different rooms together, Woodhaven supplied wide-plank luxury vinyl flooring from Twelve Oaks.
Custom Enhancements and Cabinetry Upgrades
To eliminate the feel of clutter in a fully stocked, working kitchen, they included a host of special storage solutions:
- Deep storage on one side of the island to house key prep tools and large mixing bowls
- Glass front on the upper cabinetry for more airiness
- A tall pantry cabinet thoughtfully placed in the corner for a clean, built-in look
- Stacked upper cabinets to maximize vertical storage
- Roll-out trays and pullouts to keep heavy pots, pans, and small appliances hidden but easily accessible

Meticulous collaboration with contractor Ralph Dimaiolo ensured the structural changes and cabinetry installations were coordinated smoothly and on schedule. In just two months, this Matawan family had a contemporary, airy kitchen that’s as functional as it is beautiful. The light flows, the space breathes, and the old cramped kitchen feels like a distant memory.
