Outside Curb Appeal (exterior doors, windows, decks)
Posted June 27, 2024
As the summer season rolls in, bringing with it longer days and warmer nights, it’s the perfect time to refresh and enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home. Whether you’re preparing for lively summer gatherings or simply looking to enjoy a tranquil retreat right outside your door, these five tips can transform your living space into a vibrant and inviting haven.
1. Update Your Exterior Doors
A freshly painted door can significantly enhance the curb appeal of your home’s exterior. You can also pick colors that represent the summer, such as sunny yellows, sandy neutrals, sky blues and sunset-inspired pinks and reds. Some of these colors are more bold than others, but they transfer nicely to the other seasons. Complement the look with a new set of hardware!
If your door is not in good condition, you won’t want to waste time and money painting it. Even though this can make your door look better on the outside, it won’t address the issues you may be facing: drafts, difficulty closing/opening, lack of security, insect damage, etc. Consider replacing your door with something durable, secure and efficient, all perks that will help you sleep better at night!
2. Replace Your Windows
Replacing your windows is a huge project—and one you may not need just yet. However, residential windows have a shorter lifespan than many people realize, usually about 15 to 20 years. Your windows may be showing signs of wear and tear, such as weakening seals, drafts, and water seepage.
By investing in new construction or replacement windows, you can enhance your home’s exterior while also taking advantage of the latest features in energy efficiency and security, such as double-pane glass, vinyl framing, UV protection, and lightweight frames. Plus, newer windows tend to be easier to clean and care for, further beautifying your home!
3. Refinish or Replace Your Deck
If your deck is in good condition but needs a facelift, consider refinishing it. This is a tedious process, but it can be done on a relatively low budget. Pressure-treated wood boards, for example, will need to be cleaned and prepped for finishing. Once they’re sanded down and ready, you can apply a stain, sealant, or coating. This will breathe new life into your deck, and you can pick a new color!
However, if the wooden boards are rotting, or you’re simply looking for a low-maintenance alternative, consider replacing your deck and railings with PVC and composite materials. PVC and composite make excellent decking materials because they are resistant to pests, mold, and color fading. And, they don’t need to be painted or sealed—win-win!
4. Create an Elegant Landscape
Walk around your yard and see what else could use a makeover. Power washing your siding, porch, patio, and walkways lifts stains and discoloration, making them look like new. Power wash with caution, however, as the water pressure can damage surfaces.
Plant colorful flowers that symbolize summer, and revitalize your lawn by mowing high, feeding it in the early summer, spot-treating weeds, and treating for grubs. Watering is also a great way to keep your lawn looking great, but we know this can get expensive! Also, trim or prune your trees and shrubs for a neat and tidy lawn.
5. Consider New Siding
Quality vinyl siding lasts for several decades, but many homes are not built with this initially. Therefore, depending on the age of your home, you may be ready to upgrade to something different. While vinyl siding is a great choice due to its strength and durability, you may be looking for something different from your neighbors. Wood siding, particularly cedar, makes a great choice, as does fiber cement siding. Talk to a professional about your options, particularly if you live near the coast.
