How You Can Protect Your Hardwood Floors from Scratches?

Posted March 31, 2021

Hardwood floors are a beautiful addition to any home. As durable and long-lasting as they are, they can also be prone to scratches. This may not be a problem in all homes, but it’s certainly an issue in busy households with kids and pets. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your hardwood floors from getting scratched.

Here at Woodhaven, hardwood flooring is our specialty! We’ve learned a lot over the years, and we pass this information onto our customers. Below are some of our favorite tips for protecting your hardwood floors from nicks and scratches.

Layer Your Floor with Rugs

Some of our customers don’t feel a need to cover up their beautiful hardwood floors, but this is one of the first things you should do. We know you love your new floors but keeping them covered, especially in high-traffic areas, is one of the best ways to protect them. Choose matching or complementing rugs for a cohesive look throughout the home.

Leave Your Shoes at the Door

Taking off your shoes at the door does wonders for finished hardwood flooring. It prevents dirt and debris from being brought into the home, avoiding nicks and scratches. Plus, you can enjoy cleaner floors since you won’t be tracking in germs from the outdoors. To encourage your guests to do the same, add a bin for shoes by the front door. Spiky shoes, stilettos and cleats should be especially discouraged!

Clean Your Floors Regularly

Give your floors a regular cleaning each week to lift dirt and grime. You can vacuum or sweep to pick up bigger pieces of debris and then use a wet mop or similar product to sanitize. Be sure to use only approved products on your hardwood floors. Plain vinegar is usually best for hardwood, but there are a few things you’ll need to know before you start.

Apply Felt Pads to Furniture

Felt pads are good for all types of furniture, including kitchen chairs. These chairs slide back and forth every day and will cause deep scratches in the wood. Also be sure to have extra felt pads on hand since they fall off often! For metal furniture, use plastic slides instead. We also recommend not using chairs with rollers.
