3 Ways to Prepare Your Home Before a Kitchen Renovation
Posted March 01, 2023
A kitchen renovation is a major project that requires you to set up a temporary space for washing dishes and making meals. If you have a busy household with kids and pets, you’ll need to be especially mindful of how you will handle things while your kitchen is being remodeled. Even though kitchen renovations can be stressful at times, the end result is worth it! In a few short months, you’ll have a beautiful, functional space for entertaining and everyday living.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prepare your home for a kitchen renovation. Here are the top three things we recommend doing to set yourself up for a successful project.
1. Prep the Space
Before you redo kitchen cabinets and install new appliances, take some time to prepare your space. Construction work is noisy and dusty, and it can knock things off walls and shelves. Therefore, we recommend removing pictures and decorations from the walls, taking down curtains and blinds and clearing everything off the floors and countertops.
Many people choose to box everything up and sort through it later. There is no right or wrong, the important thing is that anything valuable is removed. If there are larger items that can’t be moved, such as a heavy grandfather clock, you can cover it to protect it from dust.
2. Sort Through Your Kitchen Items
Since you are most likely updating your kitchen cabinets in NJ, you’ll want to clean out your cabinets entirely. People are often surprised to see how much stuff they’ve accumulated over the years, and you probably will be, too! Fortunately, your new cabinets will make it easier to stay organized.
Box up the items you no longer use or want, and organize the items you need to be functional. Remember, your home is going to get dusty, so wrap silverware, cups, plates, etc. and keep them stored away. To make things easy, purchase plastic silverware and paper plates for your meals.
And of course, you can’t forget your pets! Move their food bowls out of the way and get them used to eating somewhere else in the home.
3. Set Up a Temporary Kitchen
When preparing for a kitchen renovation, we highly recommend setting up a temporary space that you will use as your kitchen. Kitchen remodeling projects can take several months to complete, and you can’t eat every meal out. It’s not good for your wallet or your health!
Consider the items you’ll need daily, such as your coffee pot, microwave, beverage fridge, etc. Multipurpose appliances are ideal. Also stock up on foods that don’t need to be refrigerated like whole fruits, granola bars and protein shakes. Here are some recipe ideas to get you through your kitchen remodel.
The tips above will help you prepare for a successful kitchen renovation. This is a big project that involves many people coming in and out of the home for several weeks or months, so it’s important to have realistic expectations. While it won't be easy, having a temporary kitchen set up with all the essentials will help move things along!
